Mural Project Aims to Revitalize Square

Western Texas College and the city of Snyder have come up with a unique plan for the area on the west side of the Snyder city square that was destroyed by a fire seven years ago.

A mural contest with the theme “Snyder, Texas: From Past to Present” will be held, with all submissions due to the WTC art department between March 29 and April 1.

The project’s goal is to create a large mural that will cover the north wall of the burned out portion of the square.  This mural, along with a project to create a stage and garden area on the site, will finish plans to design a park for Snyder residents to enjoy year-round.

The WTC art department is asking that students create designs that incorporate special moments in Scurry County’s History such as 1884, when the county was organized, or 1965 when Snyder was named a “Sparkle City.”  This county provides two leading energy resources, oil and wind, and many colorful figures make up its story.

Designs may be submitted in pencil, charcoal or pastel, colored pencil, digital, collage or watercolor. The design must be 88cm x 25cm (34.5in x 10in) and a name label must be securely fastened to the back and the drawing must be covered.

A limited number of research packets are available by email upon requests. Other places for research materials include Scurry County Museum, WTC visitor center, chamber of commerce, Scurry County library and online pages for the city and county governments.

All submissions will be on display throughout the month of April at the Scurry County Museum in order to allow the public to vote for its favorite design.  The winner will receive a scholarship of $1,000 and the design will be used by the city for the mural.  Even those who are not artists or have never designed a mural before may participate.
