Representatives from area schools met at Western Texas College on Tuesday to learn about new college readiness standards.
Kyle Smith, dean of instruction at WTC, said the new standards will be phased in over the next several years to replace the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test. The new standards will involve end of course work.

“College readiness has been an initiative for the past several years in which the Texas higher Education Coordinating Board and the Texas Education Agency have joined forces,” said Smith.
The lecture covered actual standards, specifically cross-district standards and introduced academic skill sets.
“We feel we can help both high school and college students,” he said. “That was really the focus today, to give those students ways to have better academic success.”
The meeting was held in the WTC Visitor Center.
