Join an ongoing Lubbock Lake Landmark field research program and international volunteer crew working with professional staff to conduct excavations at the Roland Springs Ranch Pleistocene faunal locality. The excavations taking place in Scurry County at the ranch are uncovering a variety of ancient animals that existed in the region approximately 1.8-2.0 million years ago. Currently, 49 different species have been identified from the locality and include members of all vertebrate classes (fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds, mammals). Giant extinct land tortoises are the predominant species found but extinct horses, a North American cheetah-like cat and an extinct turkey are other notable discoveries. The biodiversity documented at the locality provides important environmental and chronological data for the study of Pleistocene faunas throughout the state and nation.
Volunteers gain practical experience in field methodology
and techniques, proper field conservation of materials, and laboratory experience in processing materials from the field.
